Introduction

Many Industries have personnel working and machinery operating in extremely harsh environments, often subjected to high levels of heat, abrasion and corrosive chemicals.

Under these conditions it is important to incorporate a reliable and high quality thermal insulation and environmental protection barrier. With a commitment to research and development and leading edge technology and engineering capabilities, Mid-Mountain Materials offers a comprehensive range of coated fabrics and textiles to deliver environmental and thermal protection.

SILTEX® Products

SILTEX® Woven Silica Fabric

SILTEX® Woven Silica Fabric is a highly amorphous silica cloth that is excellent for use in welding applications, or applications that require a high-temperature resistant fabric.

Silica (SiO²) is made from fiberglass cloth that has been leached, a process that removes impurities from the fabric. This process results in a fabric that has a silica content of 96%-98%, with a continuous operating temperature of 1800°F • 982°C.

The increased silica content improves temperature and abrasion resistance, and makes silica highly resistant to splatter, sparks, and molten metal splash in very abusive environments. The flexibility of the material allows for ease in fabrication, making silica an ideal product for welding protection, furnace curtains or blankets, and heat and flame shielding.

In addition, silica has low thermal conductivity properties, high dielectric strength, low halogen content, and minimal smoke emissions.

Mid-Mountain Materials, Inc. offers SILTEX® Woven Silica Fabric in both 18 ounces per square yard and 36 ounces per square yard, which can be treated with special coatings for increased abrasion and high temperature resistance.

SILTEX® Silica Yarn and Cordage

SILTEX® Silica Yarn and Cordage is comprised of continuous filament, 96%-98% amorphous silica fibers, offering superior protection as high temperature insulation for thermocouple wires, electrical cables, and instrument elements. With excellent resistance to thermal shock and high dielectric strength, SILTEX® Silica Yarn and Cordage is highly porous, and will operate continuously at temperatures up to 1800°F • 982°C. Lubricated with PTFE for ease of handling and improved abrasion resistance, SILTEX® Silica Yarn and Cordage has minimal shrinkage at service temperatures, thus retaining their original characteristics.

SILTEX® Silica Rope, Sleeving and Tape

SILTEX® Silica Rope, Sleeving and Tape is a family of high performance textile products manufactured from high purity, high strength 96% amorphous silica fibers.  SILTEX® Silica Rope, Sleeving and Tape are available in a variety of sizes to meet the demands of your application.

SILTEX® Silica Textiles

SILTEX® Silica Textiles demonstrate the thermal performance of refractory materials, and are available as rope, tape, sleeving, and needled mat. Ideal for high temperature resistant applications, SILTEX® Silica Textiles provide continuous protection in environments with operating temperatures up to 1800°F • 982°C, and offer protection against oxidation, and most corrosive solutions and chemical reagents.

Applications for SILTEX® Woven Silica Fabric, Yarn and Cordage, and Textiles

SILTEX® Woven Silica Fabrics and Textiles are designed for use where severe high temperature conditions exist, and meet MIL-I-24244 and MIL-C-24576(SH). The amorphous silica fibers that make up all SILTEX® products are unaffected by most chemicals except strong alkalis, hydrofluoric acid or sodium, and are excellent for use in the following applications:

  • Welding/Cutting Protection
  • Heat and Flame Shielding
  • Molten Metal Splash Protection
  • Stress Relief
