The primary application of geopolymer technology is in the development of reduced CO2 construction materials. Recognised as an alternative to traditional materials such as Portland based cements geopolymers represent a movement towards more environmentally friendly engineering.

Geopolymers: Structure, processing, properties and industrial applications from Woodhead Publishing examines characteristics of this important material and applications such as in the design one-part polymer cements. Specific chapters on fly ash chemistry and inorganic polymer cements and geopolymer precursor design provide an insight into the current use of geopolymers and future industry developments. Further discussion explores geopolymer synthesis kinetics covering calorimetry, rheology, diffraction and modelling.

The manufacture and properties of geopolymers are reviewed in terms of accelerated ageing, chemical durability and life-cycle analysis. Environment issues are also considered such as utilisation of mining wastes to produce geopolymer binders. An assessment of the commercialisation of geopolymers for construction completes the title looking at both the opportunities and obstacles for future development. Valuable discussions on the future of the cement market and opportunities created from climate change and carbon trading further strengthens the reach of this valuable new title.

With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Geopolymers: Structure, processing, properties and industrial applications is a standard reference for scientists and engineers in industry and the academic sector, including practitioners in the cement and concrete industry as well as those involved in reduction and disposal.
