Konarka Becomes World Leader in Organic Photovoltaics

Konarka Technologies has just acquired Quantum Solar Energy Linz from Linz AG. In the process they have become the world leader in organic photovoltaics.

Quantum Solar will be renamed Konarka Austria Forschungs- u. EntwicklungsgesmbH (Forschungs- u. Entwicklungs is translated as Research and Development) subsequent to the acquisition.

The acquisition brings with it organic solar cell technology which will compliment their existing dye-based solar cell nanotechnology. Furthermore, Konarka’s roll-to-roll manufacturing and low cost processing expertise lends itself to the newly acquired technology.

It is also thought that organic photovoltaic technology can be used for hybrid solar cells that combine the advantages of nanocrystalline titanium dioxide and conducting polymers. Konarka’s belief in this idea is reinforced by their patent applications.
