3M, a leader in the field of innovative technology, unveiled the world's first self-charging protective communications headset at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2024 yesterday. The headsets use patented Powerfoyle™ solar cell technology to convert both solar and artificial light into clean energy and are made in part from recycled materials, thereby significantly contributing to the reduction of waste while also promoting the sustainable and long-term use of electronic products.
By combining elements of climate tech, consumer electronics, and user safety, the 3M™ PELTOR™ WS™ ALERT™ XPV headset enables users to work safely and effectively, all while remaining connected to one another. "This technology is a real breakthrough, and it has the potential to have a major positive impact on the environment," said Peter Berghamn, Business Director of 3M PELTOR. "These headsets will reduce the need for disposable batteries, which will benefit the environment - especially when you consider how many industries, professions and job sites use headsets in their day-to-day business. To produce the Powerfoyle™ solar cell technology used in the headset, 3M teamed up with Exeger, a deep-tech company from Sweden. Exeger’s unique technology enables battery-free charging and is produced with 100% clean energy in Stockholm. To further reduce their environmental impact, each headset is constructed in part using recycled plastic and electronics. The headset also supports Over-the-Air (OTA) firmware updates, which will extend the product’s overall lifetime and reduce the number of new headsets and materials needed in the long-term.

In another sustainability initiative, 3M has partnered with Voltiris, a Swiss tech company that retrofits greenhouses with solar cells which split the incoming light into two light waves, in order to reduce energy costs and increase crop yields.
