Hydro to Participate in Alunorte Alumina Expansion

Hydro, co-owners of the Brazilian alumina refinery Alunorte, will take part in the second plant expansion, that will lift capacity by 1.8 million tonnes to 4.2 million tonnes. This will result in further improvements to Hydro’s alumina cost position.

The expansion project is expected to start later this summer (northern hemisphere), with full production capacity to be reached in the second quarter of 2006. Hydro who own 34% of Alunorte are expected to contribute US$204 million to the project.

Following the expansion, supplies of alumina from the Alunorte refinery to Hydro’s global aluminium production facilities will be increased by 610,000 tonnes, to over 1.4 million tonnes.
