Cypher S Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)

Oxford Instruments Asylum Research’s Cypher S AFM offers both rapid scanning and super-high resolution. It is the base model in the highly modular Cypher AFM platform of Asylum and can be effortlessly upgraded to include the environmental control accessories of the Cypher ES and the video-rate imaging capacities of the Cypher VRS1250.

The Cypher S supports an array of imaging modes and facilitates measurements in both liquid and gaseous environments, which makes it an ideal choice for both academic investigations and industrial R&D in a broad range of fields in life science and materials science.

Easily and Routinely Obtain Higher Spatial Resolution

The Cypher S was established to attain ultra-high spatial image resolution. Its mechanical design is so stable that it can typically be used without additional vibration isolation. Dissimilar to most AFMs, the “mechanical loop” that links the sample to the cantilever is entirely contained in the scanner, making it stiff, short, and immune to outside sources of vibration and acoustic noise.

While reaching an atomic and molecular resolution is a “hero experiment” on most AFMs, these results can be incurred simply and consistently on the Cypher S in any laboratory and on any day.

Fast Scanning Increases Productivity

Each component in the Cypher S is designed to aid faster scanning. Traditional AFMs, including the AFMs sold today, are capable of scanning images at only up to 1-2 lines per second — each image takes several minutes to acquire.

However, fast scanning AFMs like the Cypher S images 10–20 × faster, which implies that it is possible to acquire images in well under a minute. The user can complete work quicker on a Cypher S, rather than setting aside a complete day for an AFM imaging session. This in turn enhances the research productivity by offering more time for other characterization methods or techniques or ample time to prepare the next experiment.

Both New Users and AFM Experts Easily Obtain Exceptional Results

The Cypher S is also convenient and effortless to use. Its low footprint and sound immunity permits it to be positioned anywhere in the laboratory. Asylum’s new Ergo software facilitates many of the most common imaging settings, which incorporates a simple workflow and proprietary AUTOPILOT algorithm for automated image acquisition.

In Asylum’s Igor Pro-based software, more advanced AFM users can funnel the full power of all modes. The Cypher S is excellent for both large interdisciplinary research groups and shared multi-user image resolution facilities.
