To help fill the knowledge gap between the innovators who design medical devices and the engineers who best understand materials and their capabilities, ASM International has announced its schedule of intensive seminars on Materials and Processes for Medical Devices (MPMD).

“These intensive seminars are designed to help participants accelerate the development of new implants and appliances,” said Pamela Kleinman, Senior Manager of Education and Events at ASM.

The following MPMD seminars will be offered May 18-21 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; June 15-18 at the SpringHill Suites Liberty Airport, Newark, N.J., and Nov. 9-12 at The Beckman Center on the campus of the University of California-Irvine:

Medical Device Design Validation and Failure Analysis; Biological Testing Methods for Combination Devices; Drug Delivery Technology; Meeting Functional Requirements of Medical Devices; Nitinol for Medical Devices; Polymer Considerations in Medical Device Design; and Stainless Steels, Cobalt Chromium and Titanium Alloys for Medical Devices.

The following MPMD seminars will be offered on Aug. 8-9 at the Hilton Minneapolis, immediately prior to the 2009 ASM Materials & Processes for Medical Devices Conference & Exposition:

Medical Device Design Validation and Failure Analysis; Biological Testing Methods for Combination Devices; Nitinol for Medical Devices; Drug Delivery Technology; BioMEMS; and Stainless Steels, Cobalt Chromium and Titanium Alloys for Medical Devices.

For user flexibility, ASM offers the MPMD seminars as single or multi-day programs. Seminar descriptions and registration information are available at www.asminternational.org. ASM seminars can also be held on-site as a custom program. For details, contact John Cerne at 440/338-5417.

The growing need for reliable materials information by the medical devices community has resulted in a growing number of new ASM events and services, including the Materials for Medical Devices Database, seminars, the MPMD Conference & Exposition, and MPMD books and publications. Also of interest to the medical devices community: the International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies (SMST) is an Affiliate Society of ASM that is dedicated to disseminating technical information and education related to shape memory and superelastic materials, particularly Nitinol alloys.
