Experts at CERAM , the internationally renowned centre for materials and technology, based in Stoke-on-Trent , are able to assist the many companies who have to comply with PPC Regulations for Landfill, by offering their testing services.
The Pollution, Prevention and Control (PPC) Regulations 2000 together with The Landfill ( England and Wales ) Regulations (2002) specify the requirements for technical standards covering the aspects of the construction, operation, monitoring, closure and surrender of landfills.
Malcolm Rose, Manager of CERAM’S Organic Laboratory, explained: “The PPC Regulations insist that site operators produce a report on the emission of certain substances from a site. The identification of the trace component concentrations can be used to aid in the determination of releases with respect to Pollution Inventory reporting restrictions.”
To assist with this type of monitoring the Environment Agency has produced a guidance document for the monitoring of priority trace components which should be performed on an annual basis as a minimum frequency subject to site-specific circumstances.
CERAM has the capability to analyse landfill gas for a wide variety of both bulk and trace components, including those compounds listed in the guidance. Its analytical capabilities include,
- Volatile organic compounds by ATD-GC-MS
- Siloxane compounds by ATD-GC-MS
- Aldehydes and ketones by HPLC-UV
- Butyric acid by GC-FID
- Mercury by cold vapour AFS
- Arsenic (as As) by hydride generation-AFS
- Dioxins and furans by GC-HRMS
- Carbon monoxide by GC-FID
- Hydrogen sulphide by GC-FPD
- Bulk gases by GC-FID/TCD
- (Methane, CO 2, N 2, O 2, H 2, He, ethane, ethylene, acetylene)
- Low level C1-C4 Hydrocarbons by GC-FID
It also has the ability to sample for these compounds using a variety of sorbent tubes, resin traps, and additionally can take Tedlar bag samples if required.
