Spectro Mobile Metal Analyzer Measures Nitrogen and Carbon Easier Than Ever

SPECTRO Analytical Instruments presents a new version of the SPECTROTEST arc/spark-OES spectrometer at the Stainless Steel World America (September 9-10, 2008, Houston, USA). The mobile metal analyzer is even more flexible, with a smaller and more compact sample probe. SPECTROTEST is now able to tackle two new applications: The measurement of carbon in low alloy steel using arc discharge and the determination of the nitrogen content in duplex steels.

More Compact Sample Probe
The most important innovation is the sample probe, which is considerably smaller, lighter and more compact than its predecessor. With the reduced diameter of the sample probe it is possible to analyze sample surfaces in hard-to-reach locations, for example, bundled rods and bars. The standard probe can be used for quick grade identification with arc excitation as well as for a detailed analysis with spark excitation. The result is shown on the integrated display after only three seconds in the sorting mode; after five seconds in the analysis mode.

Onsite Nitrogen Analysis
When the standard sample probe is exchanged with an optionally available special sample probe with integrated UV optic, the SPECTROTEST can also measure short wavelength elements like nitrogen. “With the SPECTROTEST, metal processors can now differentiate between duplex steels using the nitrogen content. A minimum difference in the nitrogen content of 500 ppm is necessary,” explains Marcus Freit, Product Manager for mobile metal analyzers at SPECTRO. This makes SPECTRO the only manufacturer offering a mobile OES spectrometer for nitrogen determination. Performed without tools, exchanging the sample probes is quick and easy. Duplex steels are used mainly in plant infrastructure; the nitrogen content makes them extremely corrosion resistant.

Identification of Low Alloy Steels Using the Carbon Content
The determination of the carbon content in low alloy steel with arc excitation is another new application for the redesigned SPECTROTEST “We incorporated the patented cleaning system from the SPECTRO iSORT,” explains Marcus Freit. “Now it is also possible to measure the carbon content using the arc discharge without the need for argon.” The identification of micro alloys in low alloy steel with arc excitation was also improved. A further optimized selection of element and reference wavelength pairs has helped to greatly improve analytical performance.

The range of use for the SPECTROTEST includes quality control in metal producing and metal processing companies, testing of finished products in industry as well as for scrap metal dealers and the control of plant infrastructure. With its fast measuring times, the metal analyzer is especially suitable for metal processors with high volume production.
