2014 James L. Waters Annual Symposium Details Announced

The Pittcon Organizing Committee is pleased to announce the details of the 2014 [James L. Waters Annual Symposium, “MALDI-TOF." This year’s symposium recognizes the commercialization of MALDI-TOF. The speakers chosen are pioneers in its development and commercialization and are uniquely qualified to discuss the topic.

The presenters (listed below) will also discuss the current state of the technique and its future. Application areas include genomics, proteomics and other ‘omics; biomedical; biotechnology; and bioanalytical.

The symposium speakers and their session titles are as follows:

Peter Roepstorff, University of Southern Denmark, Franz Hillenkamp, University of Muenster, “Peptide and Protein Mass Spectrometry Before MALDI and ESI, the Pioneering Period”

Marvin Vestal, Virgin Instrument Corporation, “Development of TOF-MS from Intellectual Curiosity to Practical Technique.”

Richard Caprioli, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, “MALDI Imaging Mass Spectrometry: A Next Generation Molecular Mapping Technology for Biological and Clinical Research”

When asked to comment on his research, Dr. Capriolli explained, "We have developed laser-based Imaging MS for the molecular mapping of biologically and medically relevant molecules in tissues. Areas of special interest involve the molecular mapping of changes observed in diabetes in both a mouse model and in human disease, and the molecular identification of both benign and metastatic skin lesions from patient biopsies. "

Randall Nelson,
Arizona State University, “Using High Throughput Mass Spectrometric Immunoassay (MSIA) in Biomarker Development"

Franz Hillenkamp, University of Muenster, TBA

This informative session will take place during Pittcon on Monday, March 3, at McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois. See complete information and speaker bios at pittcon.org.

About the James L. Waters Symposium
The James L. Waters Annual Symposium is a unique component of the Pittcon Technical Program. In 1989, Mr. Waters, founder of Waters Associates, Inc. and president of Waters Business Systems, Inc., proposed that the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) offer an annual symposium exploring the origin, development, implementation, and commercialization of scientific instrumentation of established and major significance. The objective of the symposium is to recognize workers and the development and application of instrumentation by preserving the early and in some cases, more mature history of the important contributions, as well as the cooperation between inventors, scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and marketing organizations. All expenses associated with the symposium are generously funded by Mr. Waters. Administration of the symposium, including selection of the topics and speakers, is the responsibility of the SACP.

About Pittcon
Pittcon® is a registered trademark of The Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, a Pennsylvania non-profit organization. Co-sponsored by the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh and the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, Pittcon is the premier annual conference and exposition on laboratory science. Proceeds from Pittcon fund science education and outreach at all levels, kindergarten through adult. Pittcon donates more than a million dollars a year to provide financial and administrative support for various science outreach activities including science equipment grants, research grants, scholarships and internships for students, awards to teachers and professors, and grants to public science centers, libraries and museums.
