Founded 50 years ago, 2015 sees the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the Thermal Methods Group, a sub-group of the Analytical Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry. It will be celebrated with a three day conference at Churchill College Cambridge with leading speakers from all over Europe.
TAC 2015 will celebrate the 50th Anniversary Conference of the RSC Thermal Methods Group.(TMG). The TMG have been the guardians and promotors of thermals analysis and calorimetry in the UK at all levels from academia and research to industry with routine use in quality assurance and control of products.
This three day event will be held in the historic University City of Cambridge and offers a unique opportunity for delegates to hear about the past, present and future of thermal analysis and calorimetry. The Conference Dinner, which will be a celebration of 50 years of the TMG, will be held in the beautiful Dining Hall at Corpus Christi College on Tuesday 31st March.
Three leading international speakers have been invited to present plenary lectures: Professor Vincent Mathot, was formerly a senior manager at DSM Research. On retirement, he founded SciTe. B.V. in Geleen, the Netherlands and is also now Guest Professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Among his awards, Vincent received the NATAS Mettler Toledo Award for his work on polymers. Professor Jean Rouquerol is now at MADIREL, UMR CNRS, Marseille. Now as Emeritus Research Director, CNRS, Jean is a pioneer of sample controlled thermal analysis techniques and a Past-President and Honorary Lifetime Member of ICTAC. Professor Bill Jones is Professor of Materials Science at Cambridge University and has special research interests in solid state chemistry and crystal engineering.
In addition to the Plenary Lectures, there will be a full technical programme including several international speakers. A list of papers currently submitted is on the TMG website. Those interested in presenting a poster at the Conference should submit a preliminary abstract (up to 300 words) as soon as possible to [email protected]. There will also be a comprehensive exhibition showing the latest advances in instrument technology.
About the Thermal Methods Group
The Thermal Methods Group (TMG) promotes awareness of all thermoanalytical, calorimetric and related techniques by a range of activities, including a regular programme of scientific meetings, training workshops and publications.
Strategic objectives of the Thermal Methods Group are:
- to act as a focus for thermal analysis in the UK and contribute to the furtherance of thermoanalytical and calorimetric techniques worldwide, through the support of European and international organisations in the field
- to organise a regular programme of meetings on thermal analysis, calorimetry and related techniques. Joint meetings with other groups of the Learned Societies and with other European thermal analysis groups are encouraged
- to publish TMG News to keep Group members in touch with the proceedings of recent meetings, details of future meetings and developments in instrumentation, as well as the fortunes of their fellow thermal analysts
- to encourage younger scientists working in thermal analysis to present their work to a wider audience by making the TMG Award to provide expenses at major European (ESTAC) and international (ICTAC) meetings
- to promote the education of thermal analysts by holding regular seminars and workshops and by encouraging the exchange of information between the instrument manufacturers and users of thermal equipment.
