Characterization plays a critical role in deepening our fundamental understanding of battery materials, spanning atomic-scale properties, interfacial reactions, electrode processing, and cell failure mechanisms. However, to ensure that advanced characterization tools are applied to the right “nails,” we must first identify the scientific challenges that are most relevant to practical batteries and their manufacturing.
This talk will use single-crystal cathodes as a platform to demonstrate how a suite of complementary characterization tools can be applied to address scientific questions across multiple length scales, from interfacial reactions and crystal growth mechanisms to electrode processing and manufacturing. The discussion will highlight how characterization can bridge fundamental understanding with practical challenges and ultimately guide materials innovation and manufacturing science.
