New 30-60 Minute Combined Charging System (CCS) From ABB

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will launch their new Terra multistandard 20 kW fast charger at the eCarTec in Munich on 15 – 17 October, Hall A5, stand 403.

ABB has broadened its support of  the new Combined Charging System (CCS) standard with the expansion of its 4 generation  ‘all EV’ fast charging product portfolio with the introduction of the Terra  multistandard DC fast charging station 23. The Terra 23 can charge EVs in 30-60 minutes and complements the best-selling CCS fast charging station dedicated for highway and urban ring locations, the Terra 53. The new 20 kW multistandard station offers CCS, CHAdeMO and fast AC charging functionality and is available in configurations with one, two or three outlets.

The Terra 23 is designed for areas where EV drivers plan to stay 30-60 minutes, such as retail locations, commercial office environments and EV auto dealerships. Its 20 kW design allows for quick and easy installation on widely available 3 x 32A low-cost grid connections.

If in the future charging needs change, installed Terra 23 charging stations can be field upgraded to support the full 50 kW power level. ABB has a track record  of leadership in supporting global open standards, such as the CCS standard. In 2012 it was the first company to demonstrate a working CCS prototype at EVS26 in Los Angeles and at eCarTec in Munich. This past summer ABB participated in interoperability workshops with BMW and Volkswagen demonstrating successful charging of the next generation CCS compatible EVs. More recently BMW showcased the Terra 53 at the IAA Live-Drive event in Frankfurt and at the Plug-In 2013 Conference & Exposition in San Diego.

All chargers in ABB’s portfolio will continue to be supported by the ABB charging management platform. The platform enables maximal uptime and optimal user experience through remote monitoring and assistance, remote updates and upgrades and extensive interfacing with payment methods, charging service provider networks, back-office systems and smart grid energy systems.

“ABB’s expanded portfolio enhanced with its open industry standard  connectivity services is a natural future proof solution for all customers  to effortlessly incorporate any desired charging time (15-30 or 30-60 minutes) or charging standard into their business” says Hans Streng SVP, GM Product Group EV Charging Infrastructure. “By providing customers with a broader EV infrastructure platform, customers can now simply tailor their installed base of fast chargers depending on the location and amount of CCS or CHAdeMO cars available in a specific region.”

ABB continues to be the market leader throughout Europe for its expertise in deploying and managing nationwide EV charging networks, industry leading uptime and reliability and long-standing leadership and 'commitment to excellence' within the EV charging industry.

To date, the company has helped facilitate the creation of nationwide charging infrastructure networks in The Netherlands, Denmark, Estonia and Belgium.
