The US Naval Research Laboratory have officially opened their Nanoscience Research Laboratory. The facility cost US$12.7 million to construct and was funded in conjunction with Military Construction (MILCON).
The Nanoscience Research Laboratory will provide a forum for scientists to interact on areas such as materials, electronics and biology.
The facility boasts 5000 square feet of Class 100 clean rooms, 4000 square feet of quiet laboratory space and approximately 1000 square feet of ultraquiet laboratory space. They also have facilities for the fabrication, manipulation and characterisation of nanomaterials in carefully controlled environments.
The Nanoscience Research Laboratory will also be the home for the Naval Research Laboratory’s Institute for Nanoscience. The Institute will focus on the Naval Research Laboratory’s in-house expertise from various disciplines so that they exploit resources in a manner not previously possible. It will also have the ability to host external scientists for both long and short term visits.
