Bal Seal Engineering Develops Ultra-Pressure Seals for UHPLC Pumps

Tailored-engineered sealing solutions provider for analytical sciences and lab instruments, Bal Seal Engineering is producing 30,000 psi seals for the future-generation of high pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) pumps.

Bal Seal is producing pump seals for mobile phase applications that demand intense pressure that are used for analysis of high-viscosity inorganic samples for quality control and pharmaceutical development. Lower buffer necessities, compact sample sizes, quicker flow rates are the major advantages of UHPLC, which is economical and offer superior quality analyses.

Bal Seal is developing the 30,000-psi pump seals in collaboration with numerous prominent OEM companies. Sophisticated polymer formulations are used for the production of the pump seals and some setups will use the company’s established Canted-coil technology for highly efficient sealing performance and longer operating life of the seal. Special designs of backup seals will offer more safety against extrusion in specific applications. The pump seals can also be used in other available pumps in the market that offer a performance range between 20,000 and 30,000 psi.

The UHPLC and HPLC piston seals are produced to very fine tolerances to fit around the pump piston to eliminate eluent leakage, which produces adverse situations such as system crash and contamination. Bal Seal offers customized seals with high abrasion resistance and longer operating life for HPLC system OEMs in mobile phase applications when buffer salts are present.
