Granutools Launches the New GranuDrum More Automation | Faster Results | Higher Accuracy

Granutools is proud to introduce the new generation of the GranuDrum, its automated powder flow rheometer based on rotating drum technology. A powder sample is analyzed while rotating in a transparent drum, and advanced image analysis tracks the powder/air interface and its fluctuations to quantify the Cohesive Index, Dynamic Angle of Repose, Aeration Index and Roughness Index. Redesigned in both hardware and software, the new GranuDrum brings more automation, faster results and higher accuracy to laboratories and production environments working with powders.

More Automation

The new GranuDrum now features a motorized door and a fully automated workflow, from measurement to report with PDF and XLS export. Standardized automated SOPs, automated thixotropy and hysteresis analysis, and a measurement queue reduce operator intervention and ensure highly repeatable results, independent of the user.

Faster Results

Practical tests such as thixotropy, fluidization, settling, caking, agglomeration, segregation and aeration are directly available in the software. Automatic data collection, storage and reporting shorten the path from sample to decision, while the drum cell is designed for easy filling and cleaning. Users can now also export a movie of each measurement, making results easier to review, share and discuss with colleagues and peers.

Higher Accuracy

The new GranuDrum now captures high-definition images (up to 3088 × 2076 pixels, up to 16 times more pixels than before) at frame rates up to 60 fps. Combined with its unique fluctuation-based cohesion measurement and a rotation speed range from 0.1 to 250 rpm, this delivers a finer description of powder behavior. Measurements are compliant with ISO/ASTM TR 52952:2023 and ASTM D8648-25, and calibration tools and reference materials are available to guarantee high reproducibility.

Smarter Decisions with Granulyzer AI

To make decisions faster, the new GranuDrum comes with the new Granulyzer AI, the brain of data interpretation. Building on previous versions, which made it possible to open and visualize large amounts of data quickly without third-party software and to run advanced analytics on samples tagged with variables such as particle size distribution and environmental conditions, this new generation integrates AI. It enables users with limited powder flow knowledge to perform straightforward diagnostics and make decisions, reducing both decision time and errors.

“Over the last ten years, the GranuDrum has become the reference system for image-based powder flow analysis and has contributed to new ASTM and ISO standards. With this history in mind, we redeveloped it from scratch, hardware and software, around two ideas: simplicity and automation,” says Filip Francqui, Managing Director of Granutools. “It has never been so simple to generate data with a GranuDrum, and with the new Granulyzer AI, decisions are faster than ever.”

Applications That Make a Difference

  • Additive Manufacturing: Characterize powders for PBF, Binder Jetting and SLS, and support powder recycling strategies.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Support screening, formulation and tableting with reliable flowability and cohesion data.
  • Batteries: Optimize powder behavior in dry-coating processes.
  • Quality and R&D: Monitor powder performance, characterize raw materials and feed DEM simulations and digital twins.

Models and Options

The new GranuDrum is available in two models: GranuDrum Classic (room temperature) and GranuDrum High Temperature (up to 250 °C). Both are compatible with controlled atmospheres (gas, humidity and temperature), and the sealed cell can be used in gloveboxes and hoods. Available options include a new Large Drum Cell (165 mL) for the Classic model, a Reduction Kit (10 mL), Calibration Kit and Reference Material, IQ / OQ / PQ Certification and 21 CFR Part 11 Compliance.
