Hiden CO Analyser Supports Quantitative CO Analysis in Complex Gas Mixtures

Hiden Analytical announces the availability of the CO Analyser Carbon Monoxide Analyser, providing dedicated quantitative CO analysis in complex gas mixtures alongside Hiden mass spectrometry systems.

Designed to integrate with Hiden HPR-20 and QGA 2.0 Gas Analysis systems, the CO Analyser provides dedicated CO measurement while the mass spectrometer monitors other components within the gas mixture. This approach is particularly relevant where nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane and other species are present and can complicate CO analysis.

Demonstrated CO Measurement in Complex Gas Mixtures

Testing demonstrates the combined approach using complex gas mixtures containing CO2, Ar, CH4 and H2 alongside two different concentrations of carbon monoxide.
For a prepared mixture containing a calculated 0.52 vol% CO, the CO Analyser measured 0.51 vol%. In a second test containing 0.10 vol% CO, the analyser measured 0.09 vol%. In both tests, the measured CO concentration was within 0.01 percentage points of the calculated concentration in the prepared mixture, while the mass spectrometer simultaneously monitored the other gas components.

The results demonstrate close agreement between the prepared and measured CO concentrations and illustrate how dedicated CO analysis can complement multi- component mass spectrometry when analysing complex gas streams.

CO Measurement for Syngas, Biogas and Catalysis

In syngas research, where carbon monoxide and hydrogen are key components, combining the CO Analyser with mass spectrometry enables dedicated CO quantification alongside simultaneous monitoring of hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane and other gaseous species. This supports the study of gas composition and changes during reaction and process conditions.
The same combined approach can support biogas and gas-conversion research, where multiple gaseous components may be present. Where carbon monoxide is present or generated, the CO Analyser provides dedicated CO measurement while the mass  pectrometer provides wider multi-species analysis.
Carbon monoxide can also be an important reactant, intermediate or product in catalysis research. Combining dedicated CO analysis with real-time mass spectrometry enables researchers to monitor changes in gaseous reactants and products as experimental conditions change.

Integrated Dedicated CO Analysis

The CO Analyser is designed for continuous analysis and is available with measurement ranges from 0–2,000 ppm to 0–100% CO, depending on application requirements. It can be synchronised with Hiden mass spectrometer software, enabling CO measurements to be acquired and displayed alongside mass spectrometry data.
By combining dedicated CO quantification with multi-component mass spectrometry, the CO Analyser extends the gas analysis options available to researchers working with complex gas mixtures across syngas, biogas, catalysis and related applications.
