Heraeus Acquires Unaxis

Heraeus Holdings GmbH, via its subsidiary W.C. Heraeus GmbH & Co Kg is furthering its push into thin film technology by acquiring the company Unaxis Materials Deutschland GmbH from the Swiss Unaxis Group. They also have acquired the assets of Unaxis Materials Inc in the USA and have an option to buy the Singapore operation. Personnel from the German operation will also be taken on by Heraeus, while the operation will become part of Heraeus’ Thin Film Materials Division. The sale is yet to be approved by the German federal Cartel Office.

Heraeus’ thin film operations concentrated on sputter targets for coating of large areas. Applications include electronics, data storage, displays, abrasion resistance and decorative coatings. Unaxis will add sputter and evaporation technologies for coating glass. Applications of this technology include flat screen displays, data storage, electronic components, tools and other decorative coatings.

Unaxis is also worldwide supplier of production systems for fields such as semiconductors, data storage, flat panel displays and optical components.
