Sunoco to Close Polypropylene Line

Sunoco Inc intends to shut one of its polypropylene lines at La Porte, Texas in the third quarter of 2002. The closure has been deemed necessary as this line is inefficient compared to other plants and does not offer the growth potential of other facilities.

The line that will be closed contributes 200 million pounds per year, to a total production 1 billion ponds per year for the entire plant. Sunoco currently produces 2.3 billion pounds per year of polypropylene from 6 lines.

Sunoco have also been working on increasing the efficiencies of plants that it has acquired over the recent years from Aristech Chemical and Epsilon products to cement themselves in the top five polypropylene manufacturers in North America.
