Ruukki Oy, Raahe/Finland, has placed an order with SMS Demag,Germany, for the supply of a new downcoiler for the existing 80" hot strip mill.
The aim of the modernization work is to allow the reliable coiling of a large number of different steel grades, such as low and mediumcarbon steels for cold rolling, structural steel grades, high-strength sectional steel, dual-phase steel, tube steel grades and special steels. The presence of high-strength steel grades in the product range means that it is necessary to provide very powerful drives for the downcoiler and for the pinch roll unit. SMS Demag has placed particularly strong emphasis on designing a sturdy downcoiler frame, curved apron plate and wrapper roll.
The new coiler is to be installed in place of Downcoiler No. 1 without interrupting the production work. The installation and cold commissioning are therefore to be carried out during the scheduled summer shutdown in 2006.
The decisive factor in the awarding of the order to SMS Demag was the ability to implement the quality requirements within an extremely narrow time window.
