BOE Hydis Sends First Shipment of TFT-LCD Screens

BOE HYDIS recently celebrated its first shipment of mobile TFT-LCD modules, signaling the launch of the company’s full-fledged mobile module business.

TFT-LCD maker BOE HYDIS (President & CEO B.D. Choi, www.boelcd.com) announced on July 18, 2006 that it has made its first shipment of TFT-LCD modules for mobile products.

The first items to be shipped were modules for 2-inch mobile phones, delivered to one of Korea’s leading mobile makers.

On its two lines (L1 and L3), BOE HYDIS produces LCDs for 1.8~5-inch mobile phones, PMPs, digital cameras, MP3 players and Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPC).

The company aims to increase its production scale from the current 1.5 million units per month to 2.5 million units per month by the fourth quarter of 2006, and to 55 million units next year. By the end of this year, the LCD maker will be supplying products to around five domestic and international companies.

The LCD module refers to a complete LCD product that is supplied to set makers. After the TFT substrate goes through the TFT process, liquid crystal is injected between the TFT substrate and the color filter substrate to make a panel. This is followed by post-processing where the back light, polarizer and driver IC are assembled to the panel to make it complete. Up until now, BOE HYDIS only sold products at a state prior to post-processing.

Haesung Park, president & general manager of BOE HYDIS, explained, “With the start of LCD module provisions to leading Korean companies, we expect a sales increase in the mobile business from the second half of the year. In the future, BOE HYDIS will be fortifying its mid to small-sized LCD business by searching out strategic clients both in Korea and abroad.”
