Introduction

Copper is an extremely useful metal, its high thermal and electrical conductivity find a number of applications in fields such as electrical component manufacture, etc. The nature and the amount of impurities that are alloyed with copper determine the application for which the alloy is used for.

The heat treatment methods used to treat copper enhance its ultimate tensile strength. Copper C65400 is an alloy of copper and silicon and is referred to as copper bronze. This alloy is available in the form of bars, rolled bars, plates and sheets.

Machinability: The machinability rating of this alloy is 30.

Welding Methods: Welding processes such as seam welding, spot welding, butt welding and gas shielded welding are best suited for working on this alloy. Processes such as soldering, brazing and oxyacetylene welding are rated ‘good’ for this alloy. Coated metal arc welding process is rated ‘fair’ for working in this alloy.

Forging – Hot forging characteristics are not known for this alloy.

Hot working - Copper UNS C65400 alloy has excellent hot working abilities.

Cold working - Copper UNS C65400 alloy has excellent cold working properties.

Annealing - The annealing temperature for this alloy is between 398-593oC (750 and 1100oF)

Applications

Copper UNS C65400 is used in the following applications:

  • Manufacture of electronic connectors
  • Wiring devices
  • Contact springs.
