Alessandro Pirolini

Alessandro has a BEng (hons) in Material Science and Technology, specialising in Magnetic Materials, from the University of Birmingham. After graduating, he completed a brief spell working for an aerosol manufacturer and then pursued his love for skiing by becoming a Ski Rep in the Italian Dolomites for 5 months. Upon his return to the UK, Alessandro decided to use his knowledge of Material Science to secure a position within the Editorial Team at AZoNetwork.

When not at work, Alessandro is often at Chill Factore, out on his road bike or watching Juventus win consecutive Italian league titles.

Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have developed a novel accurate method for measuring residual stress in 3-D printed metal parts. Powder-bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) is a type of 3D printing process that uses a high-energy laser beam for fusing metal powder particles. In this method the metal parts are produced using a layer-by-layer method.

Foldable MXene Polymer Nanocomposite Material Features High Strength and Conductivity

Researchers have developed an advanced polymer nanomaterial that is electrically conductive, strong, and yet flexible enough to be folded easily. The material offers a new approach to improve aerospace components, flexible armor, water filtration, and electrical energy storage. The research was a joint effort of the Dalian University of Technology in China and the Drexel University.

Researchers Analyze Atomic-Scale Electronic and Structural Degradation in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory have performed three studies on the electrochemical reactions that occur in nickel, cobalt, and aluminum (NCA) lithium-ion batteries. They studied average material morphologies as well as atomic-scale asymmetries to analyze the electronic and structural and degradations of these batteries.

Researchers Develop the Coldest Cryostat Ever to Study Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay

An international team of scientists, including postdoctoral scholars and students from the US and Italy, has developed a -273.144°C cooled chamber for a prospective experiment to study about ghostlike particles called neutrinos. This work was supported by the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) in collaboration with the Department of Energy's Office of Science and National Science Foundation in the US Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.

NASA Engineers Build Aircraft Using 3D Printed Parts and Harvested UAV Components

Engineers at NASA's Ames Research Center, along with student interns have successfully utilized 3-D printed parts and components from surplus unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to build custom aircraft. Components from the small electric aircraft – the Aerovironment RQ-14 Dragon Eye UAVs, were used in this effort.
