Taiyo Yuden to Produce World’s Thinnest Speakers

Taiyo Yuden are gearing up to mass produce ceramic piezoelectric speakers. The significant thing about these speakers is their thickness of just 0.7mm, making them the world’s thinnest speakers. Furthermore, they do not require magnets, and have a volume of just 0.27-0.39cm3, making them ideal for portable devices such as mobile phones, mp3 players and laptop computers.

They intend to produce 1,000,000 of the MLS series of multiplayer ceramic piezoelectric speakers by then end of Q1, 2004. They also hope to double output within 12 months.

The MLS series speakers feature Taiyo Yuden’s recently developed piezoelectric material featuring low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology and multiplayer fabrication techniques.

Other significant features of the MLS series speakers include:

  • They offer sound quality and pressure levels matching those of dynamic speakers
  • They are 30-50% lighter than similar speakers
  • They use 50% less power which extends battery life
  • The small size and lack of magnet allow the speakers to be installed in smaller places not available to conventional speakers

The speakers will be available in three sizes with diameters ranging from 20 to 25 mm.
