Commercial Production of Superconducting Wires a Step Closer

American Superconductor have reached another milestone in the commercialisation of superconductor technology. Today, they released the first batch of high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires for production. These wires will be produced under actual production conditions to fully evaluate the manufacturing process.

This work is being carried out in American Superconductor’s facility in Massachusetts. It is the first commercial HTS wire production facility in the world.

When fully fitted out, it will have the capacity to produce 20,000km of HTS wire per annum. Also, by producing the materials in such large quantities, they hope to be able to drive the price of HTS wires down, so that they will become viable for more applications.
