NLMK Resume Steel Production Following Upgrades to Reduce Emissions

Novolipetsk Steel has resumed production at its converter #2 after the upgrade of an emission system in the BOF shop #1.

The project was completed within 107 days during which 1,500 tonnes of steel structures were installed. Prior to this project, NLMK upgraded its converter #1. In March 2010 it is planned to start upgrading the converter #3. Total investments directed to BOF shop #1 revamp amount to RUB6.7 billion.

This upgrade of the steelmaking operations is conducted within the framework of the second stage of the Technical Upgrade Program together with the engineering company Siemens VAI. The key objective of the modernization of the steelmaking operations in Lipetsk is the installation of the modern aspiration systems meeting the best environmental standards.

NLMK planned to upgrade all 3 converters in BOF shop #1 by adding a system of bag filters enabling them to collect secondary metallurgical gas emissions and dust.

Implementation of the system will guarantee the reduction of BOF emissions by 59% at NLMK's main production site in Lipetsk, and significantly improve working conditions for the employees of BOF operations.
