Sigma-Aldrich Expands its Bio-Pharma Operations in Scotland

Sigma-Aldrich, the life science company based in St. Louis, made a joint announcement with Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, about their plans to set up a a new powder manufacturing plant at the Irvine site which houses the company’s liquid manufacturing facility.

The proposed new facility is the second facility for powder manufacture owned by Sigma-Aldrich and is intended to serve as an internal secondary supplier as part of the company’s risk management program. The life science and high technology industry customers of Sigma-Aldrich across Europe are expected to be serviced by the new powder manufacturing facility. Scottish Enterprise, Scotland’s economic development organization, is supporting the project with a Regional Selective Assistance grant of £1.5 million.

Lena Wilson, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise and Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister will travel to Chicago to meet representatives of Sigma-Aldrich to confer about the plans of the company and to analyze options to expand the company’s operations in Scotland. The new facility at Irvine will generate 24 new jobs. First Minister, Alex Salmond stated that the expansion efforts of the company will place Scotland at the centre of Sigma-Aldrich’s European operations and will serve as an indicator to other global companies that Scotland is open for investments. The company’s liquid manufacturing capabilities at Irvine were upgraded in 2009 through a multi-million dollar investment and infusion of close to US $260,000 by way of a Regional Selective Assistance grant by the Scottish Enterprise. The Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service for on-site efficiency enhancement and other services part of the Scottish Enterprise’s customized support have been made available to Sigma-Aldrich since the year 2009.
