Poster on Micron-Scale Voids on Path-Dependence of Steel Fracture Wins ASME-IMECE 2012 Award

Shamik Basu, a Ph.D. graduate student working under Dr. Amine Benzerga in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University, won a best poster award at the ASME-IMECE 2012 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Houston in November.

Basu’s area of research is to experimentally study the effect of strain history, stress states and anisotrophy on ductile fracture in various structural metals and alloys.

The poster, “The influence of micron-scale voids on the path-dependence of steel fracture,” was presented at the ASME society-wide Micro & Nano Technology Forum, which brings together ASME members and others from different disciplines and divisions with a focus on micro and nano-scale phenomena and processes. More than 200 posters were presented with the best posters receiving recognition awards sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the ASME Materials Division.

The annual conference focuses on today's technical challenges, research updates and breakthrough innovations that are shaping the future of engineering. The congress convenes engineers, scientists and technologists of all disciplines for the purposes of exploring solutions to global challenges and for the advancement of engineering excellence worldwide.
