Clemson University is hosting the world’s leading scientists and engineers at the 15th International Conference on MacroMolecular Complexes (MMC-15) to discuss the latest advances in polymers and how they play a vital role in transforming the technological landscape for the betterment of humankind.
The biennial conference will be Aug. 13-16 at the Hyatt Regency Greenville. It is only the third time that a U.S. city has hosted the international forum.
“This conference was previously held in Helsinki, Finland; Termas de Chillán, Chile; Fukuoka, Japan; Tirrenia (Pisa), Italy; Moscow, Russia, among many other technologically advanced cities around the world,” said Anthony Guiseppi-Elie, MMC-15 program chairman and professor in Clemson University’s chemical and biomolecular engineering department. “So it’s a great honor and opportunity for Clemson University and the city of Greenville to host such a prestigious international conference.”
This year’s conference will feature some of Clemson’s own world-renowned scientists and engineers with themes that include energy harvesting and energy industry, sustainability and green chemistry, biotechnology and biomedicine and global health.
Clemson professor Marek Urban will examine self-healing polymers that change color and could be developed for use in self-healing cars, planes and bridges. Clemson professor Mark Thies will discuss his recent discovery with liquid lignin that may significantly reduce U.S. coal consumption and greenhouse gases. Many other Clemson faculty and students will join conference attendees from across the U.S. and around the world in presenting and discussing their research on all aspects of macromolecular science and engineering.
“Clemson’s success in attracting such a recognized international scientific conference featuring Clemson researchers further solidifies the state’s reputation as a leader in emerging scientific arenas, such as energy, sustainability and biomedicine,” said Nadim Aziz, Clemson’s interim provost and vice president for academic affairs.
MMC-15 is organized and sponsored by Clemson University, with additional corporate sponsorship from Michelin, Milliken & Company, ABTECH Scientific Inc. and BioDot.
MMC-15 is affiliated with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), an international organization that serves to advance the worldwide aspects of the chemical sciences and contribute to the application of chemistry in the service of Humankind.
