Excipient Posters Presented by Avantor Experts at AAPS 2013

Experts from Avantor™ Performance Materials will present four scientific poster sessions during the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) 2013 Annual Meeting and Exposition. This year’s event will be held November 10-14 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, TX.

The posters focus on research programs for Avantor’s J.T.Baker® PanExcea™ performance excipients product line as well as other excipients from the company.

“Determining Trace Elemental Impurities in Excipients” will be presented by Avantor’s Nandu Deorkar, in collaboration with Avantor’s Jin Li, Evon Bolessa, Ph.D., and Terry Baker. The poster, which will be presented on November 11 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:40 p.m., highlights robust Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) methods for determining very low levels of elemental impurities in excipients, including sodium chloride, sodium acetate, tris-HCl, and sodium citrate.

Deorkar will also present “Application of Quality by Design (QbD) Principles to Formulation of Acetaminophen Orally Disintegrating Tablets” on November 12 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. This study, done in collaboration with Avantor’s Komal Shahani, investigated the impact of J.T.Baker® PanExcea™ MC200G performance excipients on the physicochemical properties of powder flow and the physical properties of an orally disintegrated tablet using QbD principles.

Also on November 12 in the morning, Avantor’s Richard Salzstein, Ph.D., and James Farina, Ph.D., will present “Novel Polymer for Gastro-Retentive Oral Dosage Provides Clinical Improvement in Drug Release.” This study, in collaboration with Anil Gandhi, Ph.D., at Rubicon Research Pvt. Ltd., explores how J.T.Baker® PanExcea™ GR performance excipients improve drug availability for oral tablets through robust, swollen gel formation and greater retention in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Finally, “Rheology Studies of a New Gastro-Retentive Excipient with Strong Elastic Properties,” by Farina and Deorkar, in collaboration with Avantor’s Mahdu Kallam, will be presented on November 13 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. This poster highlights key rheological parameters such as viscosity, tablet yield stress, elastic modulus and viscous modulus to determine gel strength and tablet integrity of the J.T.Baker® PanExcea™ GR polymer after 24 hours.

Avantor will also exhibit its capabilities as a collaborative partner and provider of high-quality pharmaceutical specialty chemistries solutions in booth 3249, following the opening of the exhibition hall on November 11 at noon.
