MPM’s Fluid Applied Silicone Air and Water Barrier System Awarded US Patent

Momentive Performance Materials Inc., the exclusive global licensee of General Electric-branded sealants, recently obtained a patent for the complete, 100 percent silicone Air & Water Barrier (AWB) system by GE. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued the system U.S. Patent No. 8,513,328, directed to a novel “Fluid Applied Silicone Air and Water Barrier System and Process Thereof.”

The AWB system - which includes SEC2500 SilShield AWB (silicone coating), GE SilPruf* (silicone sealant) and GE UST2200 UltraSpan (silicone rubber flashing) - is an enduring option for an energy-efficient, waterproof barrier around a building envelope due to its silicone makeup. Silicone’s intrinsic physical properties and chemical structure provide the basis for long-term energy efficiency; it is resistant to UV, stable under a broad range of temperatures and permanently flexible. The result of this combination is an enduring air and water barrier.

Since silicone remains virtually unaffected by seasonal temperature variations without restriction of system flexibility, it won’t become brittle or harden as it ages - conditions that can decrease the long-term effectiveness of other such systems. In addition, the AWB system by GE has the ability to withstand weather and atmospheric conditions for decades without degradation, enabling it to remain waterproof, intact and airtight, especially important while a building awaits cladding or is left permanently exposed, such as in an open joint rain screen system. Unlike other non-silicone systems on the market, which limit UV exposure to typically six months or fewer, the AWB system by GE can meet the needs of project managers and installers who have extended project schedules.

The complete AWB system by GE offers a wide range of features and benefits for owners, specifiers, installers and eventual building occupants. To learn more, visit www.ge.com/silicones.
