MIM to Close Zinc Smelter

As was reported in December, MIM had submitted a proposal to close its Btittania Zinc smelter in Avonmouth, UK.

Subsequent to this trade unions had 90 days with which to to explore alternatives to closing the plant.

Trade unions were unable to find any viable alternatives and 80% of the workforce voted for the plant to be closed and the consultation period to be terminated effective immediately.

To this end, the plant will begin shutdown on February 20, and operations will cease by about March 1, 2003
