MIM To Close UK Lead Refinery

MIM Holdings is proposing to close one of its three lead refineries at Northfleet in the UK.

To this end they have begun consultation with the workforce and trade unions.

The refinery that they are proposing to close is the low margin number 2 primary refinery. This refinery was supplied with crude lead from MIM’s Avonmouth zinc smelter which was closed a month ago, as MIM exited the European zinc market.

The closure of the refinery is also being carried out to try an improve the productivity and competitiveness of the Northfleet operation.

As a result of the proposed closure, it is expected that Northfleet will lose approximately a quarter of its workforce, or 300 workers through redundancies.
