Uhde Electrolysis Plant in Belgium Opens

On September 12, 2006, a new electrolysis plant for the production of chlorine and caustic soda solution was officially opened at Tessenderlo Chemie in Belgium. The plant, engineered and built by Uhde at Tessenderlo, some 50 kilometres south-east of Antwerp, was handed over to the customer recently. The plant is now on-stream with an annual capacity of 272,000 tonnes of chlorine and 307,000 tonnes of caustic soda solution.

"By investing in this modern electrolysis plant which uses Uhde's latest generation of membrane cells, Tessenderlo Chemie has made a major contribution to environmental protection," said Dr. Benno Lüke, Head of the Electrolysis Division at Uhde, on the occasion of the opening.

Uhde's responsibilities under this contract comprised the basic and detail engineering, supply of equipment, the construction and also supervision of the commissioning activities. The contract value was approximately euros 100 million.
