Acumentrics/Sumitomo Form Fuel Cell Joint Venture

Acumentrics and Sumitomo have formed a joint venture to market and sell Acumentrics proprietary tubular solid oxide fuel cell power systems in Japan.

Acumentrics will take responsibility for solid oxide fuel cell technology, while Sumitomo will look after market requirements and marketing duties.

The new company, Acumentrics Japan Co will initially concentrate on modifying Acumentrics prototype natural gas powered, rapid start tubular solid oxide fuel cell, “T-SOFC” systems for the Japanese market. These units generally have a 2-10 kW capacity and are used in residential and small commercial applications. They also envisage 100kW units for use in larger commercial applications further down the track.

The market for these devices is expected to grow rapidly given Japan’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and their dependence on imported sources of energy.
