The second phase of the Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique was opened on October 8th. The Mozal project is owned by BHP Billiton (47%), Mitsubishi Corp (25%), the Industrial Development Corp of South Africa (24%) and the Government of Mozambique (4%).
Following on from the success of phase I which was completed 6 months ahead of schedule and US$100 million under budget, phase II was completed in 26 months, 7 months ahead of schedule and a staggering US$195 million under budget. The phase II expansion involved the construction of another 288 pots, adding 253,000 tonnes per year capacity, which doubles the plants’ capacity.
The plant is currently exceeding its design capacity of 506,000 tonnes of aluminium per year. Furthermore, it is achieving this at one of the industries lowest production costs.
