Alcan to Construct Spent Pot Lining ( SPL ) Treatment Plant - News Item

Alcan have developed a value-creating and sustainable solution for the treatment of spent pot linings, the material removed form the bottom electrolytic cells used to produce aluminium. Disposal of these materials has been a environmental concern to all aluminium producers.

Alcan will spend CAN$150 million on the construction of a treatment plant in Saguenay, Canada to demonstrate their technology which will be used to treat both their own waste, and that of other aluminium producers.

The in-house developed technology will not only treat the spent pot linings, but will also completely recycle the component substances.

The plant will have a capacity to treat 80,000 tonnes per year and will use Alcan’s Low Caustic Leaching and Lime (LCLL) Process.

Construction on the plant is scheduled to begin the second quarter of 2004.
