Cranfield University’s MSc in Advanced Materials provides a fundamental understanding of materials’ properties and their processing. It also aims to develop personal skills in problem solving, research methods, teamwork, and management techniques.

Students benefit from the use of a wide range of facilities including exceptional materials preparation and characterization equipment 100m2 of clean rooms and extensive coatings facilities. Recent investments include composite, impact, and motorsport laboratories.

Course overview
The course comprises eight one-week assessed modules, a group project and an individual project.

The modules:

  • An Introduction to Materials Engineering
  • Machining, Moulding and Metrology
  • Failure of Materials and Structures
  • General Management
  • Finite Element Analysis and Materials Modelling
  • Materials Selection
  • Surface Science and Engineering
  • Composites Manufacturing for High Performance Products

Group project
The group project provides students with the opportunity to work in teams to solve an industrial problem. The project applies technical knowledge and provides training in teamwork and the opportunity to develop non-technical aspects of the taught programme. Experience gained is highly valued by both students and prospective employers. For part time students a dissertation replaces the group project.

Individual project
For individual projects students can specialize in a number of areas from aerospace materials to nanotechnology and nanoscale engineering. This project allows students to demonstrate their ability to carry out independent research, think and work in an original way, contribute knowledge, and overcome genuine problems.

On successful completion of this course students gain automatic recognition that they meet the required educational standards for registration with the UK Engineering Council and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) for Chartered Engineer status.
