Visualizing True Structure of Materials with 3D EDS Solutions

This video shows Dr. Patrick Camus and Dr. Travis Rampton describing the techniques using the latest software which allows microanalysts to extract 3D images as well as comprehensive quantification results from their EDS analysis. The presentation briefly describes 3D Visualization of data, background on the collection of the data, and the latest EDAX product on visualization of three dimensional EDS data. The progress of EDS analysis has starkly been on the top surface structures of the sample such as spectra (elemental quantification), maps (spatial distributions of elements or phases), characterization of the surface, and unknown sub-structure (3D structure controls properties). Obviously, the three-dimensional structure affects the real properties of the material so it is very important to understand this aspect. Popular 3D sectioning methods for materials are mechanical polishing, focused ion beam (FIB), and laser ablation. The video also shows a brief presentation on 3D EBSD / EDA user setup, 3D sample preparation, and advancements in EDS analyses.
