Degussa Begin Planning for Isophorene Plant in Germany

Degussa AG of Dusseldorf has begun basic planning on a new production line for isophorone products at its site in Herne, Germany. The unit, which is intended for the production of the solvent isophorone and its derivatives, concerns an investment in the high double-digit million euro range. Once the planning work has been completed, construction of the unit, which is to take up operation in 2007, has to be authorized by the Management Board and Supervisory Board of Degussa.

With its Coatings & Colorants Business Unit, Degussa is the global market leader in all stages of isophorone chemistry, and already operates two other isophorone production lines in Herne as well as one in Mobile, Alabama.

Isophorone and its derivatives are used in many different areas. While isophorone is mainly used as a solvent in the formulation of industrial paints, derivatives such as isophorone diamine and isophorone diisocyanate find use in solvent-free coatings for industrial flooring and in the production of light- and weatherstable automotive paints as well as high-quality parts for automotive interiors.
