Hydro and Rusal Enter into Long Term Agreement

Hydro Aluminium and Russian Aluminium producer, Rusal have furthered their existing relationship by entering into a 10+ year agreement. The terms of the agreement cover production and sourcing of high quality extrusion ingots, designed to meet the increasing demands of their global markets.

Hydro will assist in the upgrading of Rusal’s Sayanogorsk smelter. The project which will take place in two stages will increase the plants capacity by 80,000 tonnes per year in 2003 and a further 80,000 tonnes per years a few years later.

Hydro will supply its proprietary casting equipment and technical knowledge to Rusal, so that Rusal can produce aluminium to Hydro’s specifications. Hydro will then source aluminium ingots from Rusal’s plant, cementing Rusal’s position as Russia’s largest exporter of high quality aluminium billets.

The upgrades are consistent with the company’s long term strategy of increasing the proportion of value added cast house products in its production mix.
