Schreiner MediPharm Develops Plastic Specialty Label

Schreiner MediPharm has designed a plastic specialty label that is suitable for a wide variety of pharmaceutical product markings. The product allows printing of plastic films along with water-based inks by using inkjet systems.

The specialty label from Schreiner MediPharm allows high-quality marking of pharmaceutical products quickly and cost-effectively using inkjet systems. The plastic specialty labels can also be custom-printed with the use of the existing inkjet printers without any change in the process. Thus, a cost-effective, competent and eco-conscious substitute for solvent-based inks is offered to the manufacturer of pharmaceutical products.

Transparent film is the most commonly used product for marking glass containers in the pharmaceutical industry. Till now, printing plastic films with water-based inks was not possible with the inkjet systems because the inks could not be absorbed by the plastic material. This remained as a major challenge and finally Schreiner MediPharm has discovered a solution for this issue. The solution involves application of a water-absorbing coating on the plastic label parts, which enables variable marking with water-based inks and inkjet printers.

The marking gets dried in less than a second. The specialty plastic label can be designed by placing the barcode under the coating, so that the content is protected after labeling. The process prevents entry of moisture as well as mechanical abrasion.
