Precision Castparts to Supply Titanium Castings for New Howitzer

Precision Castparts Corp have just received an order from BAE Systems to supply titanium casting for the new XM777 155mm lightweight Howitzer

The contract worth over $130 million will run until the year 2010. It involves the supply of 11 of the 28 titanium investment castings per gun set.

Precision Castparts have already begun pilot production and have supplied the first set of components. One more set is due for delivery this year, with production to ramp up to 13 sets per month in 2006.

The new design has significant cost savings over previous designs, with the eleven separate components replacing over 400 fabricated items. They are also providing finishing operations such as machining, painting and kitting, which in turn enables BAE to reduce cycle times.
