BASF to Exhibit at 2013 High Performance Composites for Aircraft Interiors Conference

BASF Corporation will demonstrate high performance composites that make aerospace parts lighter and more sustainable at the 2013 High Performance Composites for Aircraft Interiors Conference , October 2-3, at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington.

Ralph Maier, Ph.D., Technology Manager for Aerospace at BASF Corporation , and Raj Mathur, Ph.D., Vice President of Technology Development for PlastiComp, Inc ., will present “Polyarylethersulfone-based Long Fiber Thermoplastics (LFT) for Metal Replacement in Aircraft Interior Applications,” on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 3:30 p.m. The key topics of this presentation include:

  • BASF’s Ultrason® polyarylethersulfones, a class of FST (fire, smoke, and toxicity) compliant high temperature thermoplastics, their properties as well as semi-finished goods made from these materials.
  • The application of PlastiComp’s LFT technology to Ultrason reinforced with long carbon fibers. These composite materials have potential for further penetration into traditional metal applications in the cabin interior on account of their high strength to weight ratios.

The High Performance Composites for Aircraft Interiors Conference is co-located with the Aircraft Interiors America Expo this year and will bring together designers, engineers and program leaders from the global aerospace industry and focus on new developments in the fields of high-temperature and fire-resistant applications.

BASF will be exhibiting its portfolio of sustainable light-weight materials for aircraft interiors, including Ultrason high temperature thermoplastics and foamed core materials made from Elastollan® thermoplastic polyurethanes, Baxxodur® latent cure epoxy systems and Cellasto® microcellular polyurethane foam at booth 922. Application examples to be displayed include:

  • Complet® long carbon fiber reinforced polyethersulfone (PESU) for metal replacement in aircraft interior parts, made from Ultrason by PlastiComp Inc.
  • Divinycell F® core materials, made from Ultrason polyarylethersulfones by The Diab Group – a replacement material for honeycomb.
  • Light weight panels made with Baxxodur® latent cure epoxy systems by General Plastics , used as metal replacement for floor boards in cargo containers.
  • Stimulite® seat cushions made by Supracor , an alternative to foamed seat cushions, offering increased seating comfort, durability, space and weight savings potential, and recyclability.
  • Basotect® UL light weight, flexible, FST compliant melamine foam for thermo-acoustic insulation provides excellent sound absorption, high thermal insulation properties and easy installation.

Complet is a registered trademark of PlastiComp, Inc. Stimulite is a registered trademark of Supracor. Divinycell F is a registered trademark of The Diab Group.
