Alcan Expands Australian Presence

Alcan has announced that it has acquired the capsules and closures distribution businesses of Classic Packaging and Nellie Products. Both companies are subsidiaries of Foster’s Group, one of the worldwide leaders in beer, wine and spirit production, and former exclusive distributors of Alcan Stelvin closures in Australia. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

"The acquisition of these businesses is a further step in Alcan Packaging’s strategy of expanding its geographic footprint into growing and competitive economies, and thereby enabling it to better serve customers’ needs in the region," said Christel Bories, President and Chief Executive Officer, Alcan Packaging. "Our leading position in closures is built on innovative and high quality products, such as Stelvin, which is growing in popularity thanks to its performance and convenience," she added.

This acquisition builds on Alcan’s release of June 13, 2005 announcing the establishment of a Stelvin production facility in Australia. Located in Adelaide, SA, the “state-of-the art” manufacturing facility, named Alcan Packaging Capsules of Australia, will begin production of Stelvin’s complete range of closures in January 2006.

These announcements represent Alcan Packaging’s investment of more than AU$20 million in expanding its capsules and closures business in Australia.
