Alunorte Become 3rd Largest Alumina Producer in South America

Alumina do Norte do Brasil S/A (Alunorte) will become the third largest alumina producer in South America when it inaugurates its third production line later today.

The third production line will bring a 50% increase in capacity from 1.6 million tonnes to 2.4 million tonnes.

Hydro Aluminium who owned 25% of Alunorte, anticipated the expansion and increased their stake in the company to 34%. This entitles them to 800,000 million tonnes of alumina, the raw material used for primary aluminium production.

The expansion project at Alunorte involved construction of new port and power generation facilities. The project cost about US$300 million and was completed within its 30 month time schedule.
