Outokumpu Order Stub Graphite Coating System from Stimir

Outokumpu Technology has ordered a stub graphite coating system from Stimir of Iceland. The system is to be installed in the rodding plant at the greenfield smelter currently under construction at Sohar, Oman.

Graphite is applied to anode stubs prior to sealing into the carbon anode with molten cast iron. The thin graphite film significantly reduces the risk of the cast iron fusing into the surface of the stub, a phenomenon which prevents easy removal of the cast iron “thimble” when the spent anode rod is recycled. The graphite coating also improves the electrical conductivity of the thimble-to-pin interface.

Stímir will supply a complete aqueous graphite dipping system using a proven design already supplied to other smelters, most recently to Alcan Iceland. Stub drying after dipping will be by natural gas burners.

Stimir hf. is a solution provider to the primary aluminium industry. All aspects of design and fabrication are undertaken at Stimir’s own facilities, ensuring total quality control and on-time delivery.
