BHP Steel to Change Name

Following its demerger from BHP Billiton, BHP Steel Ltd will be changing its name during the year 2003/4.

BHP Steel licensed the acronym "BHP" from BHP Billiton at the time of the demerger until June 30, 2004. They have since unsuccessfully petitioned BHP to keep using the acronym, so will be forced to change their name by the June 30, 2004 deadline.

The new name issue will be discussed in more detail with shareholders at the annual general meeting in November. In the mean time, they will work on strategies to preserve the goodwill associated with the BHP name.
