Data Solutions for Battery Manufacturing Quality

In this interview, learn to optimise battery manufacturing with Thermo Scientific™ Avizo™ Software, ensuring data integration, quality traceability, and AI-driven insights.

What is the primary challenge your solutions aim to solve for battery manufacturers?

For imaging and materials teams, the challenge is turning vast amounts of imaging and spectroscopy data into something useful. Our Thermo Scientific Avizo Software helps visualize, segment, and measure critical battery features, whether that’s crack propagation in cathodes, porosity in separators, or particle size distribution in anode materials. We translate these images into reports and metrics that engineers can act on.

How does Avizo handle different imaging modalities and file types?

Avizo is highly flexible. We support 2D SEM data, 3D tomography, synchrotron imaging, and even spectroscopy overlays. Whether it’s Fib-SEM, CT, or TEM, we can combine and correlate that data. You can even 3D print models of segmented battery features. And yes, we also support AI workflows: users can train, validate, and deploy segmentation models tailored to their specific data.

How is AI being used in your platforms, and how accessible is it for non-programmers?

Avizo allows users to create their own AI models directly in the software. You can label ground truth, train a model, and reuse it on new datasets—no coding required. For those who want to go deeper, we support Python scripting and ONNX models, so it's easy to integrate with broader AI pipelines or collaborate with data scientists.

What’s your view on enabling technologies like dry electrode processing or solid-state batteries?

Dry electrode processing is a game-changer because it simplifies manufacturing and eliminates toxic solvents. But it also demands new characterization methods—thicker electrodes and new materials require smarter data interpretation. Tools like Avizo help ensure that the quality isn’t compromised when switching to new methods.

What’s one thing battery companies should do today to prepare for tomorrow’s challenges?

Start correlating your imaging data across scales. Connect SEM with CT, connect microstructure with electrochemical performance. That’s how you find root causes, not just symptoms.
