Introduction

Aluminium / Aluminum alloys feature strong corrosion resistance characteristics. These alloys are defined as good low-temperature alloys with high electrical conductivity. Aluminium / Aluminum alloys gain strength when exposed to subzero temperatures and lose strength when these alloys are exposed to high temperatures. Aluminium / Aluminum alloys are sensitive to high temperatures ranging between 200 and 250°C (392 and 482°F).

The following datasheet provides an overview of Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Annealing

Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy is annealed at 413°C (775°F) for 2 to 3 hours. The alloys is then cooled at 10°C (50°F) per hour to 260°C (500°F) and finally cooled in air.

Cold Working

Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy is cold worked to a limited extent in comparison to other Aluminium / Aluminum alloys.

Welding

Resistance welding is recommended for Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy. Arc welding and gas welding are not recommended for this alloy.

Forging

Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy can be forged.

Forming

Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy can be formed in a limited manner and severe cold working is not recommended for this alloy.

Machinability

Conventional methods are used for the machining process of Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy.

Heat Treatment

Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy can be solution annealed at 493°C (920°F) and then water quenched. The T 851 temper is produced when precipitation hardening is performed for 12 hours at 190°C (375°F) that is followed by air cooling.

Hot Working

Hot working for Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy is not recommended as this alloy has the tendency to crack due to heat input.

Hardening

Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy is hardened by the precipitation hardening method for 12 hours at 190°C (375°F) and then cooled in air.

Aging

Aging for Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy is done at 190°C (375°F) for about 12 hours and the alloy is then cooled in air.

Applications

Aluminium / Aluminum 2124 alloy is used in aircraft structures amongst other things.
